How long do I have to wait until I can swim after treating my pool with chemicals?
My water in my above ground pool was very cloudy after this past weekend's fun in the sun. I just added chlorine shock, alge treatment, pH reducer and conditioner to my pool about an hour ago (3pm pst). How long until we can swim in it again?
The IDEAL ranges are:
free chlorine: 3 - 5 ppm
pH: 7.2 - 8.0
alkalinity: 80 - 120
Cloudiness is caused by inadequate FILTRATION, not chemical imbalance.
Always measure both free chlorine and total chlorine. You should shock the pool when total chlorine = 1 1/2 times free chlorine.
In other words, if free chlorine is 3.0 ppm, then total should not get above 3.0 + half of 3.0 (1.5) which = 4.5 ppm.
A strong chlorine smell and stinging eyes does not mean there is too much chlorine in the pool. It means that the chlorine that is in the pool is dirty (combined). When you smell that and your eyes are stinging it means the pool is filthy and in need of serious attention. If you are at a public pool, you should complain to the pool operator. In a clean, well run pool you will not smell this no matter what the chlorine level is.
pH is used to make chlorine disinfection more effective, which is why it should be kept between 7.2 - 8.0
Alkalinity buffers the pH and keeps it stable. When alkalinity is out of the ideal range, the pH gets whacked out and chlorine does not disinfect properly.
Usually after a pool is shocked properly, it is ready to swim about 12 hours later. But make sure you are using the right calculations.
