FINIS SwiMP3.1G Waterproof MP3 Player $134.99 Ideal for swimmers, triathletes, surfers, synchronized swimmers, and anyone else involved in general water activities, the Finis SwiMP3 1G waterproof MP3 player allows you to listen to music underwater. Swimming pool etiquette? not a strong swimmer.?
I haven't been in my local swimming pool since I was a child. I'm not a strong swimmer but I don't need lessons either. What would the etiquette be?
There's a junior and an adult pool. Is it ok to swim beside the wall in the adult pool? I don't want to get short of breath in the middle of a lane and have nothing to hold on to.
Will a life guard designate a lane or do you just choose one yourself?
Do you need to wear a swimming cap, goggles or flip flops to the edge of the pool?
Sorry, I'm just clueless.
also I wear glasses. Can I wear them in the water or do I have to leave them at the side?
Different pools have different rules; you will need to check locally.
Some pools require showers prior to entering (helps with keeping pool chemistry balanced). Some pools (rarely, in my experience) require caps. I have never been to a pool where flip-flops were required, although several people do wear them as you describe.
Lap swimming etiquette differs from pool to pool. In pools where there are many lap swimmers, it is customary to "swim circle." That's where swimmers always stay on one side (typically the right) of the black line on the bottom of the pool. A single lane can accommodate several swimmers this way, but they need to be close to the same speed. When the pool isn't as crowded, it's common that two people "swim sides" -- where each person takes one side of the lane.
Since you haven't been to your local pool in a long time, I would suggest asking the guard which lane might be best for you. Since they are there for hours, they should be able to direct you to the right place. (They might be able to warn you about the habits of other swimmers, too!) Tell him/her that you might need to stop mid-lap. Depending on the depth of the pool and the shape of the gutters, it might be easier for you to stand up than to hold onto the wall.
As far as glasses are concerned, unless you plan to keep your face out of the water the entire time (e.g. side stroke, breaststroke), I would not advise wearing glasses. If the pool doesn't have a lot of foot traffic, just leave them at the end of your lane. Get a pair of goggles. Before I got really near-sighted, I found that some types of standard goggles corrected my vision under water. If swimming is something you like, you can order goggles with corrective lenses.
People at the pool are generally friendly, so just say "hi" and don't be scared.
