No Chlorine Reading in Salt Water Pool?
I have run the Intex salt water chlorine generator for a week now, 5 hours a day, and have yet to get a reading on the chlorine. (The strips are new)
I put the recommended amount of salt in, the generator has not alerted me to low or high salt readings so I assume the level is fine. (Have not purchased the salt strips yet.) The pool is still clear and the only problem I am having is getting the alkalinity to stay up. I just don't want to run into problems down the road and am hoping to have the pool balanced before it gets really hot. Could the low alkalinity be the culprit? I am using soda ash to raise alkalinity but it's not wanting to raise. Should I switch to an alkalinity increaser instead? Any suggestions? I have an above ground vinyl pool that is 18x48.
Have you established the chlorine residual yet, 1-3ppm? If not then you need to understand the chlorine generators produce a paltry amount of chlorine, really only a little bit more than the amount lost on a daily basis. If you are waiting for your chlorine level to come up you can wait a really long time. Also check to see if a small stream of bubbles, like beer or champagne bubbles are coming out of the return lines while the pump and generator are on. You can also take a sample of water from this area to test for chlorine. If you cannot get any sort of reading or see the bubbles you may have a bad unit.
Have you established the recommended level of stabilizer, conditioner, or Cyanuric Acid? Usually for salt pools you need about 70ppm. CYA is hard and can take time to dissolve. This will protect your chlorine levels from the Sun's UV rays which ddestroychlorine.
To get your CYA, and chlorine levels up you can use Dichlor in the meantime.
To get your alkalinity up you can use Baking Soda with some effect though it is not nearly as strong as soda ash. Soda ash is likely stronger than anything else you could buy.
What is your pH?
Once your chlorine generator is working you will have to use Muriatic Acid weekly to bring your pH down.
You're welcome!!
