What kinds of plants are good for an open top aquarium?
I have a 55 open top aquarium and I want to stock it with plants that will grow above the waterline. I have grown some Dracaena (lucky bamboo) and wanted to know if there were any other plants that would create a canopy? Also, I see a lot of planted aquariums with mosslike ground cover. What is a good, easy to keep, ground cover that will quickly take over the bottom of my tank?
I don't have any experience with plants that will grow both above and below the water, but I love java moss for creating a mossy carpet for ground cover. I've always just sort of pulled the clump apart and spread it over the bottom of the tank, securing it with small bits of gravel.
Other people are more elaborate and cut small 1/2" sections. They cover a rock or piece of driftwood with a net, and tuck each length of moss under a portions of the net till the covering is sparse but even. In no time it will form a dense mossy carpet over the rock or driftwood.
It is incredibly low maintenance. It requires low light, no fertilization besides fish, no CO2. It's practically perfect.
