My cocker spaniel is terrified of everyone that comes into the house, how do I stop this?
(I'm asking this question again because I don't think I gave enogh info) She gets so scared that she pees, and it doesn't matter if she knows the person or not. I got her when she was 7 weeks old and she is 10 1/2 months old now. I take her for walks 2 times a day, one in the morning and one in the evening. And I try to take her to the beach or the park 2 or 3 times a week and she does fine. The only time she gets so scared she pees is when she sees baby strollers ect. (things she doesn't see often) but that doesn't seem to happen as often anymore. We always have alot of people over but shes just never got over it. But I feel so bad for her because she is such a sweetheart and I want other people to see how sweet she is.
Don't make a big deal out of people coming over. You need to remain calm. Ask visitors to ignore your dog when they come, and let her approach them when she is ready. Forcing the issue is only go to make it worse.
When she does decide its ok to go over to a visitor have them pet her under her chin, and look over her, not directly at her. If she does pee, ignore it. This is submissive urination and trying to correct it will only make it worse.
Explain to your visitors why they need to do this, if they know why they need to follow this routine they are more likely to follow through with it.
