Can I use that canned spray Foam insulation for packaging?
I am shipping something heavy and wanted to spray that foam so that it expands and dries in place, holding the item secure in the box. I know I can probably force other packing stuff all around, like bubble wrap or styrofoam pieces, but the question is if I can use the spray and let the foam dry. Thanks
Yes, spray foam works, but do not use expanding foam, it will expand out of the box and into the product you wish to ship. You should use the regular non expanding foam. Any home improvement center will have both types in a can, so be sure to check the label before you purchase.
Securely wrap the item to be shipped in Cellophane, such as Handy Wrap or Saran Wrap. Put plenty of cellophane around the item to be shipped, Make it look like a mummy. Spray the box about 1/3 full of foam, Cover the foam with a layer of cellophane. Lay the item to be shipped on the layer of Cellophane. Cover the item with another layer of cellophane and work it around the item. Then finish filling the box with foam. Close the box and let it dry.
The purpose of the two layers of cellophane is so the person receiving the item can pull the foam apart in two halves and remove the item. Without the layers of cellophane, the item will be inside a solid block of foam the receiver may never find it.
