1000mW 808nm Laser Infrared IR Nightvison Flashlight - can it do damage at distance?
i have this on my night google. there is a warning "but do not point the laser to anyone as it's rated 1000mW and it can cause immediate damage on eyes!" . the range of the flashligh laser is 3000ft. i know that i can realy cause damage if by incident someone looks at the beam at close range, but will the same happen if the person is far away at 2500ft, shouldn't the lasers strenght recrease with the distance? this really worries my because i don't want legal problem due to improper use of the googles.
thank you
Well, normally, when you think of a laser, you think of columnated beam that does not diverge. This would be stupid for night vision purposes (it would be like trying to see in the dark using laser pointer). So my guess is the beam is strongly diverging (more like a flashlight than a laser pointer). This means it will loose power quickly the further you get away from it. But, none the less, 1W is a lot of power. The damage threshold of the eye is around 1mW. This is a fuzzy number since it actually depends on beam area as well, but it's a good rule of thumb. So you have a power 1000 times what it takes to damage a human eye. And since it is IR, people will not see it, so they will not respond to it until the damage occurs. For high power visible light, your eye automatically blinks and looks away to minimize damage when the light gets too bright, but this does not happen for IR light. So IR light is more dangerous. To answer your question, I would need to know a lot more about your device. But if I were you, I would never point that at anybody, no matter how far away. (My guess is that at 3000ft, there probably would not be a problem, but given the little info I have, I can't rule it out. Your users manual should say something about this.)
