first time scuba diving?
I will be diving for my first time this coming weekend - i am not a strong swimmer, infact i just learned how to swim recently, i can swim the length of the pool, but i do get tired. Furthermore, i totally suck at treading water - half the time my head will go under water and then i come back up - I know there's something called a bcd vest in scuba diving - will this help me a lot with staying at the surface? what else do i need to know before diving in?
The first thing you need to know is don't do it unless you are with an instructor. There are classes called "Discover Scuba" and others that will give you a first taste of diving. You must have basic water skills before you dive. I know that PADI requires a 200 yard swim (without stopping) and treading water for 10 min before they are allowed to take the class.
A BCD is a Buoyancy Control Device. It's not a lifejacket. They are made for use UNDER water not on top of it. Yes divers use them to stay afloat to rest while on the surface, but it's not normally for long periods of time. Many of them will push you forward in the water if you are not weighted properly.
My recommendation is don't just decide to go diving with some buddies without getting proper instruction first. You would be risking your life and the lives of your friends also. If they are going diving then you should stay on the surface with a life jacket on and snorkel, and even then there should be someone to show you the proper techniques so you will have a good time.
Good luck and don't kill yourself
