My pool water appears blue but it still cloudy what can I do?
I got this pool this June and I have had major problems keeping it clear. It is a metal frame Intex vinly pool 14 x 42. After about two weeks of setting and filling up the pool, it became a very milky white color. During this time there was an usual amount of rain fall. Then after shocking the pool several times, clarifying, brushing, vacuuming and testing the pool it is a cloudy blue color. Right now all the levels are good according to my 6-way test strips. It has been about 3 weeks or more and I still cannot see of bottom of my shallow 3.5 foot pool. I also noticed I have a film on the top of the pool. It appears to be scum but on one has swam in the pool for weeks. I have spent hundreds of dollars on chemicals and I am getting tried of it. I am only trying to fix the problem to allow my children to swim in the pool. Can anyone help?
Cloudy water is a sign of suspended material in the water. It can be so fine in size that the particles cannot be caught in a regular pool filter. Most large, in-ground pools come with a "Diatomaceous Earth" or "DE" filter that is used to remove fine particles from the water that cause cloudiness. Think of it as a "HEPA filter for your water". If you don't have one, check with a swimming pool/chemical company to see if they carry them.
A DE Filter is just like a regular filter, but you pour in a white powder (it's very tiny crushed diatoms made of silica) into the filter while it's running. This creates tinier pores in the filter and results in your filter being more efficient at removing very fine particulate matter from the water.
I have one I purchased for my aquariums called a "Magnum 350 Deluxe" which is supposed to circulate 350 gallons per hour through the filter. It works well for under $150...I got it at PetsMart.
